About

What does Beta mean?
Beta means we‘re still in the testing phase of trutap. There are features we are still working on which you will soon be able to enjoy, such as sending SMS‘s, inviting your friends, send emails and more. Stay updated!
What is trutap?
trutap allows you to take your online social life where you go. You can send group messages, SMS and email from your mobile phone for free. You can also chat with your friends on IM (e.g. MSN) and post to blogs, photo-sharing accounts and social networks - all from your mobile phone. Loving it yet?
Costs?
trutap is free to join and use, but your phone network may charge you for using the Internet on your phone. Charges are normally based on data usage, so sending/receiving messages uses very little data, but pictures can use a bit more. For more info check your price plan with your Operator.

Getting started

How do I get trutap?
Easy, simply go to the download page and create an account. Then follow the instructions to download the application onto your mobile phone and away you go!
Or you can go to m.trutap.com on your phone‘s mobile browser. And if you‘re in the UK, just text ‘trutap‘ to 80468 and we‘ll send you a download link that‘ll help you download trutap onto your phone!
What do I need to use trutap?
To get the most out of trutap you will need a supported mobile phone and a data plan that allows you to connect to the Internet from your phone.. You can find out if you have a data plan by calling your network operator.
Is my mobile phone supported?
Very likely. trutap is supported by a large number of more recent phones. A full list of supported phones can be found here
Will you be supporting more mobile phones in the future?
We are always adding new phones to our supported list so it‘s worth checking back regularly to see if your phone is there. If you have a phone that you think we should be supporting then please let us know.
What if I change my mobile phone?
If you change your phone you will need to download trutap onto your new phone.
Is my mobile network supported?
Most networks around the world are supported, as long as they allow you to download applications. If you are unsure then contact your operator and ask them if they allow you to install third party applications on your mobile phone.
Does trutap work with 3G?
Yes. However some operators restrict the downloading of third party applications, so you may need to check with your operator first.

Can I change my username later on?
If you need to change your username then you will need to signup again and create a new account. If you do this then we cannot copy across your old contacts and messages. So choose your username wisely! You do have an editable display name though, which is how people will see you, so you can change it to suit your mood!
How do I verify my account?
When you are creating your trutap account we will send you an SMS message containing a verification code. All you need to do is enter this code into the web site when asked and your number will be verified. Simple as that!
What is a WAP push?
It‘s a kind of SMS message that contains a web link that can be used by your mobile phone to open a web page. Some phones will call them slightly different things like service messages or push messages.
Where has my mobile phone stored the WAP push?
This depends on what kind of mobile phone you have, some phone brands will store them in your normal SMS message box and will have a little world icon next to them. If you cannot find the message in your normal SMS inbox then try one of the following:

  • Motorola phones may store them in a service message box in the messages menu
  • Some Nokia phones will store them as service messages
  • Samsung phones will store them under the ‘push messages‘ section of the messages menu
How do I click the link?
To click the link, start by opening the message containing the download link from trutap. Then, depending on your phone, you may need to scroll down to highlight the link and choose ‘Select‘, ‘Go to‘ or ‘Open‘. Once you have done this your phone will try to make an Internet connection and start the download.
It asks me to trust the application when I‘m downloading, why should I?
During the download process you may be told that the application is coming from an unknown source or that it is untrusted. But you can trust us! To continue the installation of trutap you should answer yes to any questions of the sort.
I‘ve clicked the link in the SMS but nothing has happened
If you have received a message containing the download link and followed it but nothing happens then it‘s likely that your mobile phone is not configured correctly to connect to the Internet. See our Connection problems FAQs for help on this
How long will it take to download and install trutap?
This depends on the type of contract you have. If you have a 3G connection then it should only take a few seconds, for the rest of us mere mortals it can take 30 seconds or more. If the download process seems to pause for a long while then try starting the download again by following the link in the download message again.
Do I need to keep the SMS you sent me?
Once you have successfully downloaded trutap to your mobile phone you can safely delete the message we sent you. If you need to download trutap again in the future then we can send you another message containing the link.
What happens if I run out of credit when downloading trutap?
trutap is free to join and use, but your phone network may charge you for using the internet on your phone. So if you run out of credit part way through the download process it will stop trutap from installing. You should make sure that you have enough credit on your mobile phone and try again by following the link in the message we sent you.
Can I install trutap without receiving the WAP push?
Sure, start by opening the browser on your mobile phone and enter http://m.trutap.com/ as the location.

Connection Problems

Why does my mobile phone need to connect to the internet?
trutap uses the internet to send and receive messages from your phone just like your PC does to send and receive emails.
How do I connect my mobile phone to the internet?
Most modern mobile phones are already configured to connect to the internet, but if they‘re not then it‘s easy enough to do. If you‘ve ever downloaded a ringtone or a game onto your phone then the chances are that the phone is already set up. If not then you may need to install a few APN or internet settings, which we can help with.
What are internet / APN settings?
Nothing to be scared of! They‘re just some settings on your mobile phone that tell it how to connect to the internet on your network.
How do I get internet / APN settings for my mobile phone?
During the download process, we can send you settings - look out for this button after you‘ve filled in your account details:
Make sure that you follow the instructions or it may not work. If we are unable to send you the appropriate settings then you should contact your operator and ask for internet settings for your phone. Tell them that you want to use a Java application to connect to the internet.
You can also find out about internet settings from your phone manufacturer‘s web sites - hit the appropriate logo below. In each case you want select the settings for WAP, Mobile Web or Internet. The correct settings will then be sent to you in an SMS and you should follow the instructions on the website on how to install them.

How can I check whether my internet settings are correct?
The correct internet settings will usually include your operator‘s name and then GPRS, WAP or Internet. Any settings including the letters MMS will not work. Locating your settings varies from phone to phone

Most Sony Ericsson models:
Exit trutap, go to the Main menu of your phone, go to Settings, go to the Connectivity tab, scroll down to select ‘Internet settings‘, then select ‘Internet profiles‘ and check that the correct settings are selected in the list. If not, select the right settings as described above.

Most Motorola models:
Exit trutap, go to the Main menu, go to Web Access, scroll down to select ‘Web Sessions‘ and check that the correct settings are selected in the list - they should have a ‘tick‘ to the left of the name, meaning that they are set as default.

Most Nokia models:
Try one of the following:
Exit trutap, go to the Main menu, go to Web (the globe icon), scroll down to select ‘Settings‘, select ‘Configuration settings‘, check that the right setting is displayed under ‘Configuration‘. If not, select this item and choose the right settings as described above.

or

Exit trutap, go to the Main menu, go to Services (the globe icon), press ‘Options‘, scroll to select ‘Settings‘, check that the right setting is displayed under ‘Access point‘. If not, select this item and choose the right settings as described above.
How can I set up my Java connection settings?
If you know that your internet settings are already correct, but cannot get trutap to connect, you should check your Java connection settings. If the settings are correct, they will usually be called something to include your operator‘s name and then GPRS, WAP or Internet. So for O2 it would look like this: O2 WAP

Most Sony Ericsson models: Exit trutap, go to the Main menu, select Settings, go to the Connectivity tab, scroll down to Settings for Java and select these. Scroll through the list of profiles and select the appropriate one (see above). Restart trutap and see if it works.

Motorola models: Go to the motorola website to request new settings.

Most Nokia models: Exit trutap, go to the Main menu, go to Settings, scroll to select ‘Configuration‘, check that the right settings is displayed under ‘Default configuration settings‘ and ‘Preferred access point‘. If not, select each of these items and change accordingly. Restart trutap and see if it works
Check that your mobile contract is activated for WAP/GPRS
Some operators require you to subscribe to data services before you can use them. So if you find that you have the right internet settings on your phone, but still cannot download trutap or access any other mobile internet page (e.g. bbc.co.uk/mobile) then you should get in touch with your operator so they can enable your account to use internet services.
I have tried everything and trutap is still not connecting

Closing your account
We hope you‘ll want to stay with us forever but in the unfortunate event of you wanting to close your trutap account, you can delete the application from your phone and email us at support@trutap.net (include your username too) to tell us you are leaving us. If you want to give us feedback on why you are leaving and how we could have made it a better experience for you, you are welcome to do so.
Editing your settings
Settings are not yet active in trutap, but in the meantime, feel free to choose the options you prefer. Watch here for more info as we activate them!

Messaging

Intro to messaging
trutap lets you send free trutap messages, SMS and emails to friends. Messages can be up to 400 characters long and you have unlimited storage of messages in your Inbox.
Inbox
Your Inbox shows a list of messages sent to you. Conversations are automatically created when you reply to a message or a friend replies to one of your messages. Open a message in your inbox to view the full conversation.
Sending messages
To send a trutap message from your phone either highlight a friend or group in Contacts and select ‘New message‘ from the menu, or in the ‘messaging‘ section select ‘new message‘ and you can add multiple friends and groups before typing your message.
Group messaging
You can send messages to lots of friends at once and they can reply to everyone. You can also save a bunch of contacts as a Group and message them all in one go. Great for arranging a night out and sharing the pictures!
Broadcasting?
When you ‘broadcast‘ a message your friends won‘t see who else received it and they can only reply to you. It‘s sneaky like a bcc email (blind carbon copyÉyou know what that is right?)
Starred messages
Starring a message is like saving a message. You can star individual messages by first opening the message and then selecting ‘star‘ from the menu. Starred messages will be shown in the ‘starred‘ tab of the messaging section, so they are easy to find.
Picture messaging
When you are sending a message you can choose to add a picture. Select ‘add picture‘ from the menu to take a photo with your phone‘s camera. You can‘t save pictures or add pictures from folders at the moment, but soon!
